Background Informations:
Established in 1989, the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a main forum for economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region. It holds an annual Economic Leaders' Meeting preceded by a Ministerial Meeting. China became a member of APEC in 1991 and plays hosts to APEC Meeting in the year 2001. The 9th AEC Economic Leaders' Meeting takes place in Shanghai on 20-21 October. The theme of the 2001 APEC Meetings is Meeting New Challenges in the New Century: Achieving Common Prosperity through Participation and Cooperation.
