The Premature End of the Facial Makeups of Peking Opera Stamps

In 1963, the Department of Stamp-Issuing scheduled to issue the facial makeups of Peking Opera stamps. Designer Liu Shuoren undertook the task of designing the draft. The values in set were 8. The characters included were Meng Liang, Li Kui, Huang Gai, Sun Wukong, Lu Zhisheng, Lian Po, Zhang Fei and Dou Erdun. The serial number was S62. The name was "the Facial Makeups of Peking Opera", the size was 30mm * 40mm, the perforation was 11.5 *11, the whole sheet was 50 (10 * 5). It had been scheduled to come out in 1964. When the stamps came out and were about to sell, the Reforms of Peking Opera began, demanding the modernization of Peking Opera. Consequently, the stamps suffered a premature end and were not issued. Only a very small quantity exist, therefore, they are very precious.

On May 20, 1996, in the philatelic items auction of the 9th Asian International Philatelic Items Exhibition, one piece of S62 Meng Liang Facial Makeup of Peking Opera stamp, with the denomination of 4 fen, good item and the 60,000 yuan ( RMB ) as the start price, was sold at 130,000 yuan ( RMB ). Another piece-----S62 Zhang Fei Facial Makeup of Peking Opera, the denomination was 20 fen, new stamp, top-grade item, the start price was 80,000 yuan ( RMB ), was sold at 125,000 yuan (RMB).
